Growing up, prevailing and making plans in order to evaluate them later or to take stock with friends: Were all decisions correct? In parenting, athletic competitions, after graduating from high school, in relationships—or that night at the bus stop. Sometimes it’s fear and sometimes it’s anger that resurfaces. And sometimes a calm glance and the right music help arrange past, present and future accurately. A film programme with documentary, musical and fictional works as well as formal experiments. (av)

O! FORTUNA I-VI

AT 2017 12 min 28 sec Vienna premiere Director Karin Berger

In this long-term project, Karin Berger documents her daughter growing up. In six chapters, important events, from ovulation to moving out, are captured pointedly and with a self-deprecating view. You can watch the joys and challenges of motherhood, in part on Super-8 and underlaid with Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. The washing machine dances, the dishes enjoy a bath and the child’s eyes sparkle. (av)

A girls’ lacrosse team at training. The sports field becomes a field of tension, where the team and rivalry are negotiated. Bodies collide, looks are exchanged, instructions are heard and threatening gestures are made. Spitting, sweating and jostling. Accompanied by the brass band Federspiel, captured in slow motion, the viewer can experience the game of the energetic (sound) body very closely. (av)

After babysitting Anna waits at the bus stop. It is night and the streets are quiet. A stranger approaches and the danger is instantly palpable. He crosses the street, circling. Seemingly on the hunt. Playing with fear, exceeding limits. Every little movement carries meaning. Time stands still, minutes become hours, while waiting for rescue. (av)

All the Tired Horses

AT 2017 24 min World premiere Director Sebastian Mayr

A New Year’s Eve dinner with friends and those who could be—but the plan is not working out: the friends come too late, and what is left is a dinner with strangers. The conversations are about Berlin and jobs, relationships and the future of monogamy. But there is no spark, no sympathy and the facade begins to crumble even before dessert is served. Escalation deluxe! (av)
